The Sweet Pea 'Bijou Mix' is a delightful dwarf variety of sweet pea, growing to a compact height of 30-45 cm. This mix produces an abundance of fragrant, ruffled blooms in vibrant shades of pink, purple, white, and red. Unlike taller sweet peas, the 'Bijou' variety has a bushy, non-climbing habit, making it perfect for borders, containers, window boxes, or hanging baskets.
Despite their shorter stature, these sweet peas offer the same classic, heady fragrance as their taller counterparts, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to your garden.
Light
Thrives in full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Can tolerate partial shade, but flowering may be reduced.
Soil
Prefers rich, well-drained soil.
Add organic compost or well-rotted manure before planting to boost nutrients.
Optimum soil pH is between 6.5-7.5.
Water
Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy — about 2.5 cm of water per week.
Avoid waterlogging, as sweet peas dislike sitting in wet soil.
Temperature
Grows best in cooler temperatures — around 13-18°C is ideal.
Sweet peas can tolerate light frost, so seeds can be sown outdoors as soon as the soil is workable in spring.
Fertilizer
Feed every 2-3 weeks with a high-potash fertilizer (like tomato feed) to encourage continuous flowering.
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they promote leafy growth at the expense of blooms.
Sowing and Propagation
Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring (as soon as the soil can be worked) or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
Soak seeds overnight to speed up germination.
Plant seeds 2.5 cm deep and 10 cm apart.
Germination typically takes 10-14 days.
Spacing
Space plants about 20 cm apart to allow room for bushy growth.
Maintenance
Deadhead regularly by removing faded blooms to prolong flowering.
Pinch out the growing tips once plants reach about 15 cm tall to encourage branching and more flowers.
Support may be needed if the plants start sprawling — small stakes or a low framework well.
The 'Bijou Mix' sweet peas are perfect for adding colour and fragrance to smaller spaces. Would you like tips on companion planting or creating a floral display with these beauties?
