Waltham Butternut Squash (Cucurbita moschata) is a popular heirloom winter squash variety known for its sweet, nutty flavour and smooth, tan-coloured skin. It produces uniform, pear-shaped fruits that typically grow 20–30 cm long and weigh around 1–2 kg. The deep orange flesh is dense, rich in vitamins A and C, and ideal for roasting, soups, and baking. This vigorous vining plant is highly productive and stores well for several months after harvest.
Growing Guide:
Soil: Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8.
Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours per day).
Planting: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep after the last frost when soil temperature is above 18°C. Can be started indoors 3–4 weeks earlier.
Spacing: Plant 90–120 cm apart in rows or mounds to allow vines to spread.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is beneficial.
Fertilization: Apply compost or balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) at planting and during growth.
Support: Can be grown on trellises to save space, but fruits may need extra support.
Harvesting: Ready in 85–100 days when skin hardens and turns deep tan. Cure in a warm, dry place for 10–14 days before storage.
This variety is prized for its excellent storage capability, sweet flavour, and disease resistance. Let me know if you need tips on pest control or companion planting!
