The Oxheart tomato is a classic heirloom variety cherished for its unique shape, impressive size, and meaty texture. As the name suggests, the fruit resembles a heart—broad at the top and tapering to a rounded point at the base. Typically ranging in colour from rich pink to deep red, Oxheart tomatoes can grow quite large, often weighing 300 to 600 grams or more. The flesh is dense, with few seeds and minimal juice, making it ideal for slicing, sauces, and preserving. Its flavour is mild yet sweet, with a smooth, low-acid profile that appeals to a wide range of palates. Grown on vigorous indeterminate vines, this variety thrives with support and regular care, producing abundant fruit over a long season.

Growing and Sowing Tips

Type: Indeterminate (requires staking or cages)

Days to maturity: 80–90 days from transplant

Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost

Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in seed trays or small pots

Maintain germination temperature around 20–25°C

Harden off seedlings and transplant outdoors when night temps stay above 12°C

Spacing: 50–60 cm between plants, 80–100 cm between rows

Prefers full sun and fertile, well-draining soil with pH 6.0–7.0

Water deeply and regularly, avoiding overhead watering

Mulch to retain moisture and reduce soil splash

Prune lower leaves and suckers for better airflow
