Oregon Sugar Pod Peas (Pisum sativum) is a popular variety of snow peas known for their crisp, flat pods and sweet flavour. These peas are perfect for stir-fries, salads, or eating fresh off the vine. The plants are compact, growing about 60–90 cm tall, and are resistant to many common pea diseases like powdery mildew and fusarium wilt.
Planting Time
Sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in late summer/early autumn for a fall harvest.
They prefer cool weather and can tolerate light frosts.
Location & Soil
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil.
Ideal soil pH: 6.0–7.0.
Add compost or aged manure to the soil before planting for better yields.
Sowing
Direct sow seeds 2–3 cm deep.
Space seeds 5–8 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart.
No need to soak seeds before planting, but you can speed up germination.
Watering:
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
Water deeply 1–2 times per week depending on the weather.
Support
While they are a bush-type variety, adding a low trellis or stakes helps keep the vines upright and the pods clean.
Trellising also improves airflow and reduces disease risk.
Care
Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers — peas fix their own nitrogen.
Harvest
Ready to harvest in about 60–70 days.
Pick pods when they are flat and bright green — before the peas inside start to swell.
Frequent harvesting encourages more pods to grow.
Companion Planting
Great companions: carrots, radishes, lettuce.
Avoid planting near onions and garlic — they can hinder pea growth.
