The Forget-Me-Not 'Blue' (Myosotis sylvatica) is a charming, low-growing biennial or short-lived perennial, famous for its delicate clusters of bright blue, five-petaled flowers with cheerful yellow centres. Blooming in spring and early summer, they form soft mounds of blooms and reach a height of 15-30 cm, spreading about 15-45 cm wide.
These classic cottage garden plants are perfect for borders, woodland gardens, rockeries, or containers. They also look stunning when naturalized in drifts beneath trees or alongside spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils. Their nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Light
Thrives in partial shade but can tolerate full sun if the soil remains moist.
Ideal for dappled light under trees or along shaded borders.
Soil
Prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Suitable soil pH ranges from 6.0 to 7.0.
Avoid overly dry or sandy soils unless supplemented with compost.
Water
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Aim for about 2.5 cm of water per week, adjusting for rainfall.
Temperature
Grows best in cool to mild temperatures between 10-20°C.
Can tolerate light frost, making it suitable for early spring planting.
Fertilizer
Doesn’t require heavy feeding.
A light application of balanced fertilizer at planting and again during flowering will enhance blooms.
Sowing and Propagation
Direct sow seeds in late summer to early autumn for blooms the following spring.
Or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and transplant once seedlings are about 8 cm tall.
Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and press gently into the soil — do not cover, as they need light to germinate.
Keep the soil moist until germination, usually in 10-14 days.
Spacing
Space plants 15-20 cm apart to allow room for spreading.
They will self-seed readily, forming natural drifts over time.
Maintenance
Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding.
After flowering, trim back plants to tidy their shape.
Thin out seedlings in spring if they become too dense.
The Forget-Me-Not 'Blue' adds a soft, romantic feel to gardens and looks especially magical alongside spring bulbs or in shaded corners. Would you like help planning a dreamy spring border or companion planting ideas?
