Growing Conditions
Temperature
Optimal germination temperature: 20–28°C
Ideal daytime growing temperature: 22–30°C
Nighttime temperature: 18–22°C
Avoid temperatures below 12°C, as this slows growth and affects fruit setting.
Soil Requirements
Well-draining, fertile soil with high organic matter.
Ideal pH: 6.0–6.8
Loamy or sandy loam soils are best.
Planting & Spacing
Seed starting: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in trays or nursery beds.
Transplant seedlings at 10–15 cm tall when they have at least 4–6 true leaves.
Spacing:
In rows: 40–50 cm apart
Between rows: 60–80 cm
Watering
Maintain even soil moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting.
Avoid waterlogging, as this can cause root rot.
Light Requirements
Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Fertilization
Before transplanting: Apply well-decomposed compost or manure.
During growth: Use a balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.
At fruiting stage: Increase potassium for better fruit quality
Support & Pruning
In greenhouse settings, staking or trellising can help support heavy fruit loads.
Remove excess side shoots to improve airflow and fruit size.
Pests & Diseases
Common pests: Aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and caterpillars. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap for control.
Diseases: Watch for bacterial spot, powdery mildew, and blossom-end rot. Ensure proper spacing and avoid overhead watering.
Harvesting
First harvest: 70–80 days after transplanting.
Fruits are ready when they turn bright yellow and have a firm texture.
Harvest regularly to encourage continued fruiting.
