Amsterdam carrots (Daucus carota) are a variety of baby carrots known for their slender, cylindrical shape and sweet, tender flesh. They are typically bright orange, smooth-skinned, and about 15 cm long. Due to their small size and delicate texture, they are ideal for fresh eating, salads, or steaming. They grow quickly and are often used as a "finger carrot" variety.
Growing Instructions:
Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6-8 hours per day).
Soil: Loose, well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Avoid heavy clay or compacted soils, as they hinder root growth.
Sowing Time: Early spring to late summer. In mild climates, they can be grown almost year-round.
Spacing: Sow seeds 1 cm deep, 4 cm apart in rows spaced 6-8 inches apart.
Thinning: Once seedlings are about 4 cm tall, thin them to 4 cm apart to allow proper root development.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once or twice a week.
Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer or compost before planting. Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers, as they promote leafy growth instead of root development.
Time to Maturity: 50-60 days.
How to Harvest: Gently loosen the soil around the carrots and pull them up when they reach their full size. Younger carrots will be extra tender and sweet.
Pests: Watch out for carrot flies; use row covers if necessary.
Disease: Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Practice crop rotation to reduce soil-borne diseases.
Amsterdam carrots are perfect for container gardening due to their small size. With proper care, they provide a delicious, homegrown treat in just a couple of months!
