Growing Instructions for South Africa (Microgreens)

Ideal Conditions

Best Sowing Months Year-round in mild climates, ideally spring to autumn (Aug–Apr).

Temperature Optimal range is 18–24°C.

Light Bright indirect sunlight or grow lights. Avoid harsh direct sun.

How to Grow

Tray & Medium

Use shallow trays (3–5 cm deep) with seedling mix, coco coir, or organic potting soil.

Sowing Seeds

Scatter seeds evenly and densely across the surface.

Press gently to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

Optionally, cover lightly with a thin layer (1–2 mm) of soil or vermiculite.

Watering

Mist gently 1–2 times per day to keep the top moist.

Use a spray bottle or bottom-watering tray to prevent disturbing seeds.

Germination

Cover trays for the first 2–3 days to block light and retain moisture (“blackout” period).

Once seeds sprout and begin to push up, remove the cover and expose to light.

Growth

In 10–14 days, microgreens will reach 5–8 cm tall with striking colourful stems.

Harvest just above the soil line using clean scissors.

Harvest & Use

When to Harvest At the first true leaf stage (usually 10–14 days after sowing).

How to Use Use fresh in salads, on toast, in wraps, smoothies, or as a vibrant garnish.

Storage Keep harvested microgreens in a sealed container in the fridge; use within 3–5 days for best quality.
